Adoption Policies and Procedures
SonnyBoy Animal Sanctuary, Inc.’s (Rescue) mission to rescue mini pigs, educate the public, and rehabilitate mini pigs so that they may find a forever home means that we must do what is in the best interest of the animal. In order to find the right home for the right animal, we have a set of policies and procedures in place for adopting an animal to their forever home.
PROCEDURES
The first step in our adoption process is to fill out an adoption application. This form gathers basic information on you and your household and includes questions specific to mini pig home requirements such as fencing, canine family members and housing status.
After you have submitted your adoption application, verification calls will be made to your veterinarian and city/county zoning office. A criminal background check will be completed including any reported domestic abuse issues. We understand that previous criminal activity does not indicate current involvement, a repeated history of these types of behaviors may require further explanation. If you have been a victim of domestic violence, this does not preclude you from adopting an animal. We may ask additional questions to ensure that we are not potentially placing an animal that may be put in a dangerous situation. Experience has shown us that often victims of domestic violence offer excellent homes to animals, especially those animals that have suffered neglect or abuse themselves.
Once the background and verification checks have been completed, our adoption coordinator will contact you to discuss the vision you have for one of our animals in your home. This process can take some time to ensure that a good match between the adopting household and animal are made. A weekend “trial” visit may be approved to ensure proper placement.
In some cases, a home visit may be required to ensure a successful placement. In the event we do ask to do a home visit, please do not take offense. We are simply committed to ensuring the best placements possible for the animals in our care.
Once the Board of Directors has approved your application for adoption and the final paperwork is completed, your new family member will be ready to go home.
POLICIES
- All applicants must complete the adoption application and the background checks described above.
- Due to the specific zoning requirements of mini pigs and the high incident of mini pig surrenders due to moving, all applicants for mini pig adoptions must own their own home. The deed to the property must show the applicant as the owner.
- Due to the nature of mini pigs and the amount of reported attacks by canines on mini pigs, applicants that have dogs in their family must agree to never allow the mini pig and the canines to be left unattended at ANY time.
- The potential adoptive family must evidence proper knowledge of mini pig behavior, personalities, and training.
- Applicants must have a current veterinarian that treats mini pigs as well as an emergency veterinarian that can be verified.
- Applicants other household animals must be up to date with veterinary care including spay and/or neuters as needed.
- The rescue sees too many animals that need homes and therefore no breeders of ANY species of animal will be allowed to adopt from the Rescue.
- Potential adopters must agree to return the animal to the Rescue if for any reason the animal does not work out.
